Coaching
Much of the training the LA receives is practiced and experienced on the job. The training is also structured to involve the supervisor. Supervisors not only need to know what the training involves but also, strategies and tools that help the LA grow. Coaching is a technique that helps clarify and achieve goals and facilitate the attainment of learning outcomes. Research shows that ninety-five percent of training when accompanied by coaching is applied on-the-job.
As a supervisor, you want your new library associate to not only perform well but also to grow in the knowledge, understanding and ability to serve customers. Supervisors and LAs are introduced to a model developed by John Whitmore (Coaching for Performance). Whitmore promotes the use of questions as the primary form of communication used by the coach in a coaching conversation. He developed the mnemonic GROW to help us remember the sequence of questions:
GOAL setting for the session-what does the coachee want to accomplish?
REALITY- what is the current situation?
OPTIONS- what strategies or courses of actions can be generated?
WHAT- will the coachee choose to do, by when, and does the chosen course move the coachee toward the goal (long or short term)?
LAs will use the GROW-TH (intended) model, introduced at the orientation session, to have 5 fifteen minute coaching conversations (5:15 Coaching Conversations) with you, to develop an action plan for continuous learning, performance improvement, manage/plan fieldwork, and create and present the Showcase project.

Coaching techniques will also be taught and applied to give technical feedback and positive reinforcement of the model communication behaviors. LAs are required to have a minimum of three peer coaching observations of their application of the behaviors. Schedules will need to be arranged so that the LA and the peer coach/es (someone from within the branch) can complete these observations.
